Consent & trust
Customer consent and trusted handovers.
This page explains, in plain language, how consent works inside the RelayLocal product. It is product education, not legal advice — the published legal documents remain the authoritative source.
Why consent is part of the workflow
A referral involves passing a customer's details from one business to another. RelayLocal is designed so that step never happens casually — it goes through a clear, recorded consent workflow instead of a forwarded text message.
What happens before details are shared
Before contact information moves, the customer is informed through the consent flow. They see who the referring business is and can decide how to proceed. Contact details are shared through the workflow only once consent is in place.
Why not just pass details around?
Casual sharing leaves the customer out of the decision and leaves businesses with no record of what was shared, when, or why. A structured workflow protects the customer experience and gives every business involved a clear history.
What businesses should do with customer information
Businesses receiving an introduction should use customer information only for the purpose of the relevant enquiry — contacting the customer about the work they asked for, nothing more.
How activity is recorded
RelayLocal keeps a record of relevant referral activity — what was relayed, who responded, and consent status changes — so businesses have visibility and an operational history of each handover.
